Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

331 – ʿAmr ibn Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) related: “My father said, ‘I have just come to you from the Prophet ﷺ in all truth. He instructed: When the time for prayer arrives, let one of you give the call to prayer, and let the one who knows the most Qur’an lead. They looked around and found that no one knew more Qur’an than I did, so they put me forward, although I was only six—or seven—years old.’ ” Reported by al-Bukhari, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Nasā’ī (1).

Lessons derived from the ḥadith:

  1. The adhān is a communal obligation: once some fulfill it adequately, the duty is lifted from the rest.
  2. The person most entitled to lead the prayer is the one who has memorized the greatest portion of the Noble Qur’an.
  3. A discerning minor may validly lead even the obligatory prayer. If it is objected that perhaps the Prophet ﷺ was unaware that such a child was leading his people, the answer is that Allah surely knew. Since Allah left the matter unchallenged and no revelation came to the Prophet declaring that leadership void, this is proof that the practice is sound and not invalid.
  4. Discernment (tamyeez) generally appears at six or seven years of age, varying with the child’s intellectual maturity; some jurists’ specification of seven is merely the prevailing norm on which they based the ruling.
  5. The Qur’an is a cause of elevation and honor for a person in both this world and the next.
  6. Leading the prayer is superior to giving the adhān, for the leadership was linked to knowledge, whereas the call was left open to anyone; additionally, rulings related to the prayer attach to the imam in a way they do not to the mu’adhdhin.
  7. Al-Bukhari records that the reason ʿAmr ibn Salamah had memorized so much of the Qur’an was that, while he was in his village,
