324. Yazīd ibn al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “I performed the dawn prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ had finished, he noticed two men who had not prayed. He called for them, and they were brought before him, their limbs trembling. He asked, ‘What kept you from praying with us?’ They replied, ‘We had already prayed in our lodgings.’ He said, ‘Do not do that. When you have prayed in your lodgings and then reach the imam before he has prayed, join him, for it will count as a supererogatory prayer for you.’” Recorded by Aḥmad—this is his wording—also by the three compilers (Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Nasāʾī), and declared authentic by al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Ḥibbān (1).

Status of the ḥadīth:
The report is Ṣaḥīḥ. Ibn Ḥajar said in al-Talkhīṣ that it was transmitted by Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, al-Nasāʾī, al-Dāraqutnī (1/413), Ibn Ḥibbān, and al-Ḥākim, all through the chain: Yaʿlā ibn ʿAṭāʾ → Jābir ibn Yazīd ibn al-Aswad → his father. Yaʿlā ibn ʿAṭāʾ is a narrator found in Muslim, and Jābir was classed as trustworthy by al-Nasāʾī and others, so the chain is sound.
