Allah; nor does he give up drinking wine out of fear of Allah. If he ever leaves it off, it is only because the chance does not present itself. Can such a person possibly be a Muslim?!
Never—because this total aversion flatly contradicts the two testimonies of faith. Had he been truthful, he would have practiced at least some part of Allah’s religion.
This discussion is different from the scholarly debate about certain deeds whose abandonment is disputed—whether leaving them amounts to disbelief or not—such as the prayer. That is another subject. Concerning the prayer in particular, the scholars differ, yet there is no doubt that whoever never prays at all, or only prays to please people, is a disbeliever.
The shaykh supported this nullifier with the words of the Exalted:
“Who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the signs of his Lord, then turns away from them? Surely, We shall exact retribution from the criminals” (22) [al-Sajdah].
And His saying:
“Who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the signs of his Lord, then turns away from them and forgets what his own hands have sent ahead? Indeed, We have placed coverings over their hearts lest they understand it, and deafness in their ears; and even if you call them to guidance, they will never be guided—ever” (57) [al-Kahf].
And His statement, glorified be He:
“But those who disbelieve turn away from that with which they have been warned” (3) [al-Ahqaf].
Thus, one who claims Islam, pronounces the two testimonies, yet then turns away completely from the religion of Allah—this very aversion belies his claim that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. If you observe such a person performing any religious act, you will find that he does it out of hypocrisy: when he is among people who stand to pray, he stands and prays; but when he is alone, he neither prays nor fasts. These are deeds a person performs in private only if he truly believes in Allah and His Messenger and knows that they are righteous actions that will benefit him.
