Kashf al-Niqab amma fi Kalimat Abi Ghudda min al-Abatil wal-IftiraatNasir al-Din al-Albani

Abu Ghuddah then concentrated his remarks on al-Thanawī’s statement, “How could Ibn Taymiyyah even be the dust on his sandal?” He criticized that phrase and wrote to al-Thanawī about it until the latter withdrew it.

The discerning reader will notice that Abu Ghuddah’s objection was purely formal, a device by which he hoped to display reverence for Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and to show that he does not pronounce takfīr on him. What escaped him is that the point most deserving of censure in al-Thanawī’s words is his claim that al-Ṭaḥāwī’s rank in hadith scholarship surpasses that of “thousands like Ibn Taymiyyah,” together with his labeling Ibn Taymiyyah an extremist. Abu Ghuddah’s silence on these two issues is the clearest proof that he agrees with al-Thanawī on both counts. This is further confirmed by what we previously cited from Abu Ghuddah himself, where—following his mentor al-Kawtharī—he lumps Ibn Taymiyyah among the hard-liners. Where, then, is the veneration and respect he claims for Ibn Taymiyyah, when he looks down on him with such a demeaning view in hadith and brands him an extremist?

Know, dear reader, that we do not rule out the possibility that Abu Ghuddah genuinely esteems Ibn Taymiyyah for certain personal qualities—his asceticism, his expertise in exegesis, hadith, and uṣūl, his patience in the face of trials and ordeals, and so forth. Hence the praise and defense he claims for Ibn Taymiyyah stem from that angle. This, of course, does not preclude his also believing that Ibn Taymiyyah is misguided in creed—accusing him of anthropomorphism and the like, exactly as his shaykh al-Kawtharī does. One matter does not cancel out the other. A perceptive reader may sense this in his words: on pages 28–29 he cites one of his own marginal notes in certain books, praising Ibn Taymiyyah and his steadfastness in prison, and then adds:

“May Allah the Exalted have mercy on him and grant us to emulate him whenever affliction, trial, aggression, or slander befalls us.”

Yet he did not ask to be granted emulation
