—continued: “bring me a bucket of water.” They fetched a pail, and he poured it over the spot and cleansed the area of urine; the matter was finished. The man then returned to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying, “O Allah, have mercy on me and on Muhammad, and do not show mercy to anyone else along with us.” The Prophet replied, “You have made something vast too narrow, O brother of the Arabs! Include everyone, include everyone!” The man later explained that he meant, “Had it not been for you they would have killed me.” Thus the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, guided this person—who had relieved himself in the most sacred corner of God’s House—with gentleness.
A report from Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah, one of the Companions, states that he once entered the mosque while the people were praying. He offered the greeting, “Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings,” while they were still in prayer. The Companions began signaling him to be silent, clapping their hands to indicate that he should not speak. Alarmed, thinking he had fallen into ruin, he quickly joined the prayer. When the prayer ended, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, called him over. Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah later said, “May my father and mother be sacrificed for him! By Allah, he did not scold, revile, or rebuke me—he was not harsh in the least. He merely said, ‘In this prayer of ours none of the ordinary speech of people is fitting.’” In this gentle, kindly manner the Prophet explained the ruling to him.
It is also narrated that Khallād ibn Rāfiʿ, another Companion who had newly embraced Islam, entered the mosque and performed the prayer while the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was watching. His prayer was wholly inadequate. He then approached the Prophet, and the Messenger of Allah said, “Pray again, for you have not prayed,” meaning that he should repeat it. He returned and prayed, but his second prayer was like the first—still deficient and incomplete. When he came back to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him
