then he will be told, “Go and join your deed.” (1)
Allah—exalted is He—has spoken of those whose scales are heavy and so enter Paradise, and of those whose scales are light and so enter the Fire (2). This follows the Qur’an’s pattern of mentioning the people of pure promise (ahl al-waʿd) and the people of pure threat (ahl al-waʿīd). Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said: “Allah has an act of devotion in the night that He does not accept in the day, and an act in the day that He does not accept in the night. The only reason the scales of those whose scales are heavy on the Day of Resurrection become heavy is that they followed the truth and bore its weight—and it befits a scale in which the truth is placed to be heavy. Likewise, the only reason the scales of those whose scales are light on the Day of Resurrection become light is that they followed falsehood and found it easy—and it befits a scale in which falsehood is placed to be light.” (3)
