—that is the verse.
Allah, exalted be He, also says,
“So that they may bear their burdens in full on the Day of Resurrection, together with part of the burdens of those whom they led astray without knowledge.” (Q 16:25)
And He says,
“While they shall be carrying their burdens on their backs—evil indeed is what they load upon themselves.” (Q 6:31)
Al-Suddi and ʿAmr ibn Qays al-Malāʾī said: When the believer rises from his grave he is met by something of the most handsome appearance and the sweetest fragrance. It says to him, “Do you recognise me?” He answers, “No—save that Allah has beautified your form and sweetened your scent.” It replies, “So I was in the world; I am your righteous deed. You used to ride upon me in the worldly life, so ride upon me today.” Then it recited, “The Day We shall gather the God-fearing before the Most Merciful as an honoured delegation” (Q 19:85), that is, mounted. As for the disbeliever, he is met by the ugliest form and the foulest odour. It says to him, “Do you recognise me?” He replies, “No—except that Allah has disfigured your appearance and made your smell repulsive.” It says, “Such was I in the world; I am your evil deed. You rode upon me in the world; today I shall ride upon you.” (1)
The same is meant by His words, “While they shall be carrying their burdens on their backs.” (Q 6:31)
He, exalted be He, also says, “We have fastened every person’s record to his neck.” (Q 17:13)
And He says, “Their light will surge ahead of them and on their right: ‘Good news for you today!’ ” (Q 57:12)
In another verse He says, “They will say, ‘Our Lord, perfect our light for us and forgive us.’ ” (Q 66:8)
