upon them; therefore it is clear that their entire faith was not annulled. (It is authentically reported in the Ṣaḥīḥ that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was presented with a man addicted to wine; each time he was brought to him, the Prophet enforced the prescribed punishment, and on one occasion a man cursed him) (1) whereupon the Prophet said, “Do not curse him, for he loves Allah and His Messenger” (2). (Love of Allah and His Messenger) (3) is among the greatest branches of faith, so persistent (wine-drinking) (4) does not erase (all faith, even though it diminishes some of it) (5).
It is also established from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—through numerous chains that “A person will be taken out of the Fire who has in his heart even a mustard seed’s weight of faith” (6). Had (the whole of their faith) (7) been nullified, nothing would have remained in their hearts (and they would not have been brought out) (8).
Allah, Exalted is He, says:
“Then We caused those We chose from among Our servants to inherit the Scripture; among them are those who wrong themselves, among them are those who follow a middle course, and among them are those who race ahead in good deeds.” [Fāṭir 35:32].
