483 — ‘Umar ibn Abī Mu‘ādh al-Basrī informed me, saying: Muhammad ibn Yahyā ibn ‘Alī al-Kinānī related to me, saying: Ibn Salm the poet came to Harb ibn Khālid ibn Yazīd ibn Mu‘āwiyah and praised him in these words:
When I arrived at their gates,
and met Harb, I met with success.
We found petitioners thronging around him;
even in hardship, he would be nothing but generous.
So many visitors come to them that you see their dog
afraid to growl, having forgotten how to bark.
Ibn Salm said, “He sent me a bundle of garments and a purse.” His messenger set down the bundle, apologized for how little he had sent, and said, “I would be ashamed before you to tell you what he sent with me. When you rise, take it from beneath your bedding.” He then placed one thousand dinars beneath my bedding.
