482 — Muhammad ibn Ishāq said: Al-Qāsim ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mu‘tamir ibn Iyād ibn Hamnan ibn Awf, of the line of Abd al-Rahmān ibn Awf’s brother, related to me: Humayd ibn Mayūf al-Himsī related to me from his father, who said:

I was among those present with al-Hakam ibn al-Muttalib ibn Abd Allāh ibn al-Muttalib ibn Hantab ibn al-Hārith ibn Ubayd ibn Umar ibn Makhzūm as he breathed his last in Manbij. He suffered greatly in the throes of death. While he was unconscious, I said—or a man among those present said—“O Allah, ease it for him, for he was…” and proceeded to praise him. He regained consciousness and asked, “Who was speaking?” The speaker replied, “I was.” Al-Hakam said, “The Angel of Death says to you, ‘I treat every generous person gently.’” Then it was as though a wick had been snuffed out.

Al-Qāsim said: When news of his death reached Ibn Harma, he composed these verses:

[The Basīt meter]

They asked of generosity and beneficence, “Where are they?”
I said, “They both have died along with al-Hakam.

They died with the man who faithfully kept his pledge
on the day of defense, when pledges went unkept.

What lies in Manbij, should all her graves be laid bare?
One worn away by beneficence and generosity.”
