479 — Zubayr ibn Abī Bakr said, in material he authorized us to transmit: Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abd Allāh ibn Abd al-Azīz al-Zuhrī related to me, on the authority of his two paternal uncles, Mūsā and Ismāīl, the sons of Abd al-Azīz, who said:
When a man of Quraysh broke the strap of one sandal, he would remove the other sandal as well. The strap of al-Hakam ibn al-Muttalib’s sandal broke, so he removed the other sandal and continued on his way. A Nubian man picked up both sandals, repaired the strap, and brought the sandals to him at his residence. Al-Hakam asked him, “Did you repair the strap?” He replied, “Yes.” Al-Hakam then called upon his slave girl to bring thirty dinars and handed them to the Nubian, saying, “Take the sandals back as well, for they are yours.”
