475 — Abū Muhammad al-Bāhilī related to me, on the authority of his paternal uncle, who said: Al-Farazdaq entered upon Amr ibn Utba while he was at his home in al-Zāwiya. He began wiping the sweat from his face and said:
“[Basīt meter]
Were it not for Amr ibn Utba and the hope I place in him,
Foolish Basra would never have been my home.
He gave me wealth until I said, ‘He is entrusting it to me’—
Or, ‘He has placed with me wealth he deemed our own.’
His generosity and favor win him gratitude;
The more my thanks increase, the more favors he bestows.
His lofty resolve reaches to the furthest extent of its range,
And he seeks no recompense for the kindness he has shown.”
