469 — Muhammad ibn Sālih narrated to me, from Abū Ubayda, who said: Al-Hārith ibn Sulaym narrated to me, saying:
I went on pilgrimage and passed through Medina, where I happened to find Sulaymān ibn Abd al-Malik. Saīd ibn Khālid ibn Amr ibn Uthmān came and sat before him. He said, “Commander of the Faithful, grant me redress against Mūsā Shahawāt; he has lampooned me.”
Saīd ibn Khālid ibn Abd Allāh then rose and sat down as the opposing party. He said, “He did not lampoon him; rather, he praised me.”
Sulaymān said, “Recite to me what he said.” They recited it to him, and he said, “I do not hear anything in it that lampoons you.”
He then said to Saīd ibn Khālid ibn Abd Allāh, “Present your requests.” Among the requests he submitted was one for a million. “He therefore ordered that it be given to him.” The steward considered the sum too large and came to consult Sulaymān about it. Sulaymān said, “Did you mean to make me appear miserly? Would I consider it too much for a young man of Quraysh?”
