Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

466 — Muhammad ibn Sālih al-Qurashī narrated to me, saying: Abū al-Yaqzān narrated to me, from Juwayriya, who said:

The poet Nusayb, Abū Mahjan, came to Abd Allāh ibn Jafar, who gave him a mount, clothed him, and bestowed gifts upon him. Someone said to him, “O Abū Jafar, have you given this Abyssinian all these gifts?”

He replied, “What of it? They are merely mounts that will be worn lean, garments that will wear out, and praise that will endure.”
