Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

460 — Abū Zayd al-Numayrī narrated to me, saying: Badr ibn Saīd narrated to me, saying: I heard Īsā ibn Yazīd ibn Bakr say: Al-Walīd ibn Uqba made a request of Marwān while he was governor of Medina, but Marwān made excuses to him. He then went to al-Mughīra ibn Shuba while he was governor of Kufa, and al-Mughīra ordered that he be given twenty thousand, but he refused to accept it. He then went to Ibn Āmir and complained to him of his debt. Ibn Āmir asked, “How much is it?” He replied, “One hundred thousand.” “So he paid it off on his behalf and gave him another hundred thousand.” Al-Walīd then said:

[Long meter]

May Allah make al-Mughīra, his son, and Marwān
Ibn Āmir’s pair of everyday sandals,

That they might shield him from heat and cold, from harm,
From vipers’ bites and the fierce blaze of noonday.

The Euphrates overflows for those who dwell beside it,
But your bounty reaches nomad and townsman alike.

Whenever Abd Shams brings forth the bounty of its finest man,
The pride of all who vie in glory rises ever higher in renown.

Though a people’s claims to honor be stained, you will find him,
Whenever put to the test, pure—the son of a pure man.

Abū Zayd said: “The final two verses were not among what I heard from Badr. It has also been said that this poem was composed by Abd al-Rahmān ibn al-Hakam.”
