453 — Al-Muqannaʿ—Muqannaʿ al-Ansārī—said, weeping for al-Husayn, peace be upon him, when he was killed:
“[The sarīʿ meter]
Whenever his fire was kindled,
he raised it high upon a prominent ridge,
so that a destitute seeker of flame might see it,
or a solitary traveler far from hearth and home.
Great bowls of shīzā wood stood at his door,
like watering troughs for thirsty herds.
Among all humankind, barefoot or shod,
never was there a soul like him:
the son of the chosen Prophet and Messenger,
and the son of the chosen one’s noble cousin.”
