451 — Sulaymān related to me: Abū Sufyān related to us, from Hushaym, who said:
Al-Zubayr came to Kufa while Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀs was its governor on behalf of Uthmān. He sent al-Zubayr seven hundred thousand, saying, “Had there been more than this in the public treasury, I would have sent it to you.” Al-Zubayr accepted it.
Sulaymān said: I related this report to Musʿab al-Zubayrī, and he said, “We had always believed that the man who gave him the money was al-Walīd ibn Uqba ibn Abī Muʿayt, and we used to say that it was five hundred thousand. Hushaym knows better.”
