450 — Sulaymān ibn Abī Shaykh related to me: Ahmad ibn Bashīr related to us, saying:
A man from Hadramawt came before Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz—may Allah have mercy on him—and called out to him:
[al-Basīt meter]
“You called upon a thirsting man in distress to come to you;
now a wronged man has come to you from a distant land.”
Umar asked, “Who wronged you?”
He replied, “Al-Walīd ibn Sulaymān. He seized a piece of land belonging to me in Yemen.”
Umar said, “Write on his behalf to the governor of Yemen: ‘If he produces before you two upright witnesses, restore his land to him.’”
He then said to the man, “I see that this journey has put you to expense.”
The man replied, “It cost me provisions and a mount.” Umar therefore ordered that he be given thirty dinars.
