Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

448 — Sulaymān said: Muhammad ibn al-Hakam also related to me, from Awānah ibn al-Hakam, who said:

Al-Walīd ibn Uqbah entered Muāwiyah’s presence and sat beside him on the couch. He then made a request, and Muāwiyah gave him 100,000 dirhams. Muāwiyah then said to him, “Ask no more of me.” Al-Walīd replied:

[al-Tawīl meter]

“I shall refrain and remain self-sufficient, just as you have commanded me;
once I am dead, give to those after me—or else withhold your hand.

For I am a man with ample wealth at home,
nor am I hemmed in by the keen edge of helplessness.

I shall turn my white camels away from you, for such is my nature:
whenever suspicion troubles it, it is like a sword drawn from its sheath.”
