447 — Sulaymān related to me, saying: Muhammad ibn Abbād ibn Abbād ibn Habīb ibn al-Muhallab related to me and said:
While Marwān was governor of Medina, he sent his son Abd al-Malik to Muāwiyah. Abd al-Malik entered his presence and said, “We own an estate adjoining yours at such-and-such a place in the Hijāz. Our estate cannot prosper without yours, nor yours without ours. Either cede your estate to us so that we may improve ours with it, or we shall cede ours to you so that you may improve yours with it.”
Muāwiyah replied, “Son of Marwān, I cannot be duped out of even a little, yet relinquishing much is no great matter to me. We hereby cede our estate to you, so use it to improve yours.”
