443 — Muhammad ibn al-Husayn related to me, saying: Sulaymān ibn Harb related to us, saying: Abū Hilāl al-Rāsibī related to us, on the authority of Humayd ibn Hilāl, who said:
“Two men of Quraysh vied with one another in boasting—one from Banū Hāshim and the other from Banū Umayya. One said, ‘My people are more generous than yours,’ and the other said the same. One of them said, ‘Ask among your people while I ask among mine.’ With that, they parted.
“The Umayyad asked ten of his people, and each gave him ten thousand, making a total of one hundred thousand. The Hashimite went to Ubayd Allah ibn al-Abbās and asked him, whereupon he gave him one hundred thousand. He then went to al-Hasan ibn Alī—may Allah be pleased with them both—and asked him. Al-Hasan said to him, ‘Have you already gone to anyone among my people?’ He replied, ‘Yes, to Ubayd Allah ibn al-Abbās, who gave me one hundred thousand.’ Al-Hasan ibn Alī then gave him one hundred and thirty thousand.
“He next went to al-Husayn ibn Alī—may Allah be pleased with them both—and asked him. Al-Husayn said, ‘Did you go to anyone before coming to me?’ He replied, ‘Yes, to your brother al-Hasan ibn Alī, who gave me one hundred and thirty thousand.’ Al-Husayn said, ‘Had you come to me before going to him, I would have given you more than that, but I would never give more than my master.’ So he gave him one hundred and thirty thousand.
“The Umayyad thus returned with one hundred thousand from ten men, while the Hashimite returned with three hundred and sixty thousand from three. The Umayyad said, ‘I asked ten of my people, and they gave me one hundred thousand.’ The Hashimite said, ‘I asked three of my people, and they gave me three hundred and sixty thousand.’ The Hashimite thus outdid the Umayyad.
“The Umayyad returned to his people, told them what had happened, and gave their money back to them; they accepted it. The Hashimite likewise returned to his people, told them what had happened, and offered their money back to them, but they refused to accept it, saying, ‘We would never take back anything we have given.’”
