429 — Muhammad ibn al-Husayn told me: Dāwūd ibn al-Muhabbar told us: I heard my father relate, on the authority of Shahr ibn Hawshab, that a man came to Abdullah ibn Jafar and made a request of him. One of Abdullah’s slave girls was standing before him, handing him some things he needed. Abdullah said to the petitioner, “Take her by the hand; she is yours.” The slave girl exclaimed, “You have killed me, master!” He asked, “Why, how is that?” She replied, “You have given me to a man whose need has driven him to beg.” Abdullah ibn Jafar then said to the man, “Sell her back to me, if you wish.” The man replied, “Take her, may Allah set you right, for whatever price you please.” Abdullah said, “I bought her for one hundred dinars, so you shall have two hundred dinars.” The man said, “She is yours, may Allah set you right.” Abdullah then gave him two hundred dinars and said, “When that runs out, come back to me.” The slave girl said to him, “Master, I have cost you dearly.” Abdullah replied, “The regard due to you is greater than what you have cost me.”
