Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

425 — Muhammad ibn al-Husayn told me: Dāwūd ibn al-Muhabbar narrated to us, from Sawādah ibn Abī al-Aswad, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, that a man’s mount perished. He went to the governor of Medina and asked him for a mount, but the governor did not provide him with one. He was told, “Go to Abū Jafar.” So he went to him and said:

[al-Tawīl meter]

“Abū Jafar, the pilgrims have departed;
Know well that I have no camel for my saddle.

Abū Jafar, you are of a prophetic household,
Whose prayers purify the Muslims.

Abū Jafar, the governor withheld his wealth,
But you command whatever lies within your hands.”

He therefore ordered that the man be given a mount, provisions, and ample clothing.
