419 — Muhammad ibn al-Husayn and Hārūn ibn Sufyān narrated to us; they said: ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Qurashī narrated to us; ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Uthmān narrated to us; he said: ‘Uthmān ibn Nā’il narrated to us, from his father, who said:

“I accompanied my master ‘Uthmān on a journey he made for ‘umrah or Hajj. Every member of the party used the same camel for his provisions and as his mount, except ‘Uthmān: I rode the camel carrying his provisions, while he rode the camel bearing his saddle.

“A beggar came to them and asked for charity. He then said, ‘By Allah, I could not have brought this need of mine before any people more worthy of showing me kindness than you.’ ‘Uthmān summoned me, transferred the provisions onto his mount, prepared a place for me behind him, and took me up to ride behind him, seeking thereby the praise of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. He then gave the other camel to the beggar.”
