418 — ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Jarīr al-‘Atakī narrated to me; ‘Amr ibn Marzūq narrated to us; he said: al-Sakan ibn al-Mughīra, a freedman of the household of ‘Uthmān, narrated to us, from al-Walīd ibn Abī Hishām, from Farqad Abū Talha, from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Khabbāb, who said:
“I was present with the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—when he urged people to contribute to the Army of Hardship. ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān—may Allah be pleased with him—stood and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I pledge one hundred camels, complete with their saddle blankets and pack saddles, for the cause of Allah.’
“The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then again urged people to contribute to the army. ‘Uthmān stood and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I pledge one hundred camels, complete with their saddle blankets and pack saddles, for the cause of Allah.’
