416 — My father—may Allah have mercy on him—narrated to me, saying: Ismā‘īl ibn ‘Ulayya narrated to us; Ayyūb narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Sīrīn, who said: “I was informed that a man related to Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—asked him for something, but Umar rebuked him and sent him away. Someone then spoke to Umar on the man’s behalf, saying, ‘Commander of the Faithful, so-and-so asked you for something, but you rebuked him and sent him away.’ He replied, ‘He asked me for some of Allah’s wealth—Mighty and Majestic—so what excuse would I have if I were to meet Him having acted as a treacherous ruler? Why did he not ask me for some of my own wealth?’ He then sent him ten thousand.”
