Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

415 — Ahmad ibn Muhammad narrated to us, saying: Ibrāhīm ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishāq, from Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Abī Atīq, from Āmir ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, from one of his family members, who said: “Abū Quhāfa said to his son Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—‘My son, I see you freeing weak slaves. Since you have chosen to do so, why not free strong men who could protect you and stand in your defense?’ Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—replied, ‘My father, I seek only what I seek.’” He continued: “It is related that these verses were revealed concerning none other than him and what he said to his father: ‘As for him who gives and fears Allah, and believes in the best reward’ [al-Layl: 6], through to the end of the surah.”
