Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

413 — Al-Hasan ibn Dāwūd ibn Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir al-Taymī narrated to us, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Habīb ibn Nadaba narrated to us, saying: Rawh ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir, who said: I went to Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—to ask him for something, but he gave me nothing. I then went to ask him again, but he again gave me nothing. So I said, “Either give me something or admit that you are being miserly toward me.” He replied, “What affliction is worse than miserliness? Each time you asked me, I intended to give you a thousand.” He then counted out three thousand for me.
