Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

412 — Al-Hasan ibn al-Sabbāh narrated to us, saying: Yahyā ibn Abī Bukayr narrated to us, from al-Alā ibn Sālih, from al-Minhāl ibn Amr, who said: A woman sent her son to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and told him, “Go to him, convey my greetings of peace, and say to him, ‘My mother asks you to clothe her.’ If he tells you, ‘Wait until something comes to us,’ then say to him, ‘She asks you to clothe her with your own shirt.’” He went to him, and the Prophet said, “Wait until something comes to us.” The boy then said to him, “She asks you to clothe her with your own shirt.” So he took off his shirt and handed it to him. Allah Most High then revealed: “Do not keep your hand chained to your neck, nor extend it to its utmost reach.” [al-Isrā: 29]
