409 — Ahmad ibn Muhammad narrated to us: Ibrāhīm ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishāq, who said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to the delegation of Hawāzin, “What has become of Mālik ibn ‘Awf?” They replied, “He is in al-Tā’if with Thaqīf.” The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Tell Mālik that if he comes to me as a Muslim, I shall restore his family and property to him and give him one hundred camels.”
When Mālik was informed of this, he left al-Tā’if and joined the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—catching up with him at al-Ji‘rānah, or in Mecca. He restored Mālik’s family and property to him and gave him one hundred camels. Mālik embraced Islam and became a devout Muslim. Mālik ibn ‘Awf then said:
[The Kāmil Meter]
Never have I seen or heard of anyone
Among all mankind like Muhammad.
None keeps his word more faithfully or gives more lavishly when asked;
Whenever you wish, he tells you what tomorrow will bring.
When the battalion’s sons take flight before Mashrafī blades
And the stroke of every Indian sword,
He is like a lion over his cubs,
Amid the dust cloud, crouching in ambush.
