405 — Ishāq ibn Ismāīl narrated to us: Hātim ibn Ismāīl narrated to us, from Jafar ibn Muhammad, from his father, that a beggar came to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and said, “O Messenger of Allah, give me something.” The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Who has something available to lend?” A man from the Ansār said, “I do.” He said, “Give him four wasqs.”
The man from the Ansār later needed repayment of what he had lent, so he returned several times, coming to him whenever he needed it. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—would say, “It will be forthcoming, Allah willing.” When he came for the third time, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Who has something available to lend?” A man said, “I do.” He asked, “How much?” The man replied, “As much as you wish.” He said, “Give him eight wasqs.” The man from the Ansār said, “I am owed only four wasqs.” The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “And four more as well.”
