400 — Muhammad ibn Humayd narrated to us: Salama ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ishāq narrated to me, from ʿĪsā ibn Maʿmar, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAlqama ibn Abī al-Faghwāʾ al-Khuzāʿī, from his father, who said: “The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—sent me with money to Abū Sufyān ibn Harb so that he might distribute it among the poor of Quraysh, who were then polytheists, in order to win their hearts.” When I arrived in Mecca, I handed the money to Abū Sufyān. Abū Sufyān began to say, “I have never seen anyone kinder or more attentive to the bonds of kinship than this man”—meaning the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—“We wage war against him and seek to kill him, yet he sends us gifts and treats us kindly through them.”
