Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

398 — Ahmad ibn ʿImrān and Muhammad ibn Sulaym narrated to us. They said: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sālih, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, from ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so praises you.” He replied, “I gave him two dinars. Yet I have given so-and-so between twenty and one hundred, and he does not praise me.” I asked, “Then why do you give them anything?” He replied, “They ask me, seeking to make me act miserly, but Allah—Mighty and Majestic—will allow nothing for me but generosity.” This is the wording of Ibn Sulaym.
