42 — Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allah related to me: Sayyār narrated to us, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn Shumayt ibn ʿAjlān, who said: Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī said, “A man does not attain nobility until he possesses two qualities: refraining from coveting what others possess, and overlooking their offenses.”
43 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said, “A discerning person who falls short of attaining all these qualities ought not to vie with others over some of them or cling to those worthy qualities among them with which he has been endowed.” For the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “When Allah loves a servant, He grants him one of these virtues.”
