Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

390 — Hārūn ibn Mūsā ibn Abī Alqama al-Farawī narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me. He said: Hishām ibn Sad narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from Umar ibn al-Khattāb, that a man came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—asking him for something. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “I have nothing, but make the purchase on my credit, and when something comes to me, I will repay it.” Umar said, “O Messenger of Allah, you have already given him. Allah has not burdened you with what lies beyond your means.” The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was displeased by Umar’s words. A man of the Ansār then said, “O Messenger of Allah, spend, and do not fear that the Lord of the Throne will leave you in poverty.” The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—smiled, and the gladness brought by the Ansārī’s words could be seen on his face. Then he said, “This is what I have been commanded to do.”
