Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

381 — Al-Fadl ibn Ishāq ibn Hayyān narrated to me. He said: Abū Qutayba narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Hilāl al-Madīnī, who said: My father narrated to me. He said: I heard Abū Hurayra say:

“The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—would come out to us and speak with us in the mosque. One day, he came out and spoke with us, then rose to return to his home. A Bedouin followed him. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was wearing a coarse mantle, and the Bedouin pulled him from behind until the Prophet’s neck—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—turned red. He said, ‘O Muhammad, load these two camels of mine for me—with dates on one camel and barley on the other. You will not be giving me anything from your own wealth or your father’s wealth.’

“The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘No—and I praise Allah—not until you allow me to exact retaliation for what you did to me.’ When we saw the Bedouin and what he had done to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—we sprang toward him. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘I adjure every one of you not to leave his place.’ We therefore remained as though each of us had been tied behind the next.

“He said: The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then gestured to a man and said, ‘Go and load one camel with dates for him and the other with barley. We have pardoned you for what you did to us.’”
