378 — Khālid ibn Khidāsh ibn Ajlān narrated to us: Abd al-Azīz ibn Abī Hāzim narrated to us, from his father, from Sahl ibn Sad, who said: “One day, a woman came to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—with a mantle. Sahl asked, ‘Do you know what a mantle is?’ They replied, ‘It is a wrap whose two borders are woven into it.’ She said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I wove this with my own hands and have come to clothe you with it.’ The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—accepted it, as he needed it. He then came out to us wearing it as his lower garment. A man among the people felt it and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, give it to me to wear.’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ He remained in the gathering for as long as Allah willed, then returned home, folded it, and sent it to the man. The people said, ‘You did not do well. You asked him for it even though you knew that he never turns away anyone who asks.’ The man replied, ‘Yes, by Allah! I asked the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—for it only so that it might be my shroud on the day I die.’” Sahl said, “And it became his shroud.”
