Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

373 — Ubayd Allāh al-Atakī narrated to me, saying: Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Jabala ibn Abī Rawwād narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Marwān narrated to us, from Hishām, who said: Bakr ibn Abd Allāh al-Muzanī used to give gifts to Muhammad ibn Sīrīn, and he would accept them. Muhammad’s household said to him, “This man gives you gifts, yet you do not reciprocate.” Muhammad replied, “Nothing prevents me from reciprocating except concern for him. As it is, he gives us so much, though no one gives him gifts; if we gave him a gift, he would overexert himself.”
