364 — Ibn Jamīl narrated to us, saying: Abdullāh narrated to us, saying: Haywa ibn Shurayh narrated to us, saying: Uqayl informed me, from Ibn Shihāb, that Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “I give gifts for three reasons: a gift in reciprocation, for we do not like anyone to outdo us—and whoever gives according to his means has duly reciprocated; a gift by which I seek the Countenance of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, desiring neither reward nor thanks for it; and a gift intended as a safeguard, for I do not wish anything but good to be said of me.”
