Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

341 — Shujā ibn al-Ashras narrated to us: Layth ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, from Khālid ibn Yazīd, from Sa‘īd ibn Abī Hilāl, who had been informed that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—if indeed he said it—: “Neighbors are of three kinds: a neighbor with three rights, a neighbor with two rights, and a neighbor with one right. Your neighbor with three rights is your Muslim neighbor who is also related to you: Islam has a right, kinship has a right, and neighborliness has a right. Your neighbor with two rights is your Muslim neighbor: Islam has a right, and neighborliness has a right. Your neighbor with one right is your neighbor who does not follow your religion: neighborliness has a right.”
