242 — Khalaf ibn Hishām narrated to us: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mukhtār, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwa, that Kilāb ibn Umayya went on campaign during the caliphate of ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—whereupon his father began reciting:
[wāfir meter]
“Whenever the dove weeps for her mate,
Brooding over her eggs, they call out for Kilāb.
You left your father, his hands trembling,
And your mother unable to swallow a drink.”
When this reached ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—he issued an order, and Kilāb was brought before him. When Kilāb entered his presence, ʿUmar began striking him with his whip and said, “Does jihad take precedence over your parents? Does jihad take precedence over your parents?”
