239 — Dāwūd ibn Amr al-Dabbī narrated to us. He said: Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī al-Zinād narrated to us, from his father, from a trustworthy narrator, that Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—sent a man who was on a military campaign back to his father. His father had been weeping for him and mentioning him in verse. Among what he said was:
[wāfir meter]
“Two emigrants came to him and spurred him onward—
O servants of Allah, those two were undutiful and failed.
Was that righteousness, after leaving his parents uncared for?
No, by Abū Kilāb, those two did not act rightly.”
Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—said:
“Indeed—no, by Abū Kilāb, those two did not act rightly.
You left your father with trembling hands,
And your mother unable to swallow a drink.
Whenever the dove calls to her mate over her eggs,
They call out for Kilāb.
She shakes out his bedding, anxious for him,
And keeps our unruly camels away from him.”
