Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

228 — Ibn Jamīl narrated to us: Abdullah narrated to us: Dāwūd ibn Qays narrated to us: A man narrated to me that whenever Abū Hurayra set out from his home, he would put on his clothes and then stand at his mother’s door and say, “Peace be upon you, dear mother, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.” She would return the same greeting. He would then say, “May Allah reward you well on my behalf, just as you raised me when I was young.” She would reply, “And may Allah reward you well on my behalf, my son, just as you have treated me dutifully in my old age.” He would then leave, and when he returned, he would say the same thing.
