227 — Ishāq ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us: Abū al-Nadr narrated to us; al-Mubārak ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Nusayr ibn Dhuʿlūq narrated to us, from Zabyān ibn ʿAlī al-Thawrī, who was exceptionally devoted to his mother. He said of him: “His mother once went to sleep while still upset with him. He remained standing on his feet, unwilling to wake her and unwilling to sit down. When he grew weak, two of his servants came, and he continued leaning on them until she awoke of her own accord. He would buy a bundle of greens and sort it for her stalk by stalk before setting it in front of her. He would also travel with her to Mecca. On hot days, he would dig a pit, line it with a leather sheet, and pour water into it. Then he would say to her, ‘Get in and cool yourself off in this.’ He had one of the most beautiful voices in reciting the Quran.”
