Makarim al-AkhlaqIbn Abi al-Dunya

223 — Hārūn ibn Sufyān narrated to me; he said: Muhammad ibn Umar narrated to us, from Abū Yahyā Abd Allāh ibn Maymūn, who heard Abd Allāh ibn Dīnār narrate from Abū Amr Dhakwān, who said: I heard Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—say, “Two of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—were more dutiful to their mothers than anyone else in this community.” She was asked, “Who were they?” She replied, “Uthmān ibn Affān and Hāritha ibn al-Numān—may Allah be pleased with them both. As for Uthmān, he said, ‘Since embracing Islam, I have never been able to bring myself to gaze directly at my mother.’ As for Hāritha, he would remove lice from his mother’s hair and feed her with his own hand. Whenever she instructed him to do something, he would never ask her to clarify what she had said. Instead, after she had left, he would ask those who had been with her, ‘What did my mother say?’”
