221 — Abd al-Rahmān ibn Wāqid narrated to us; Faraj ibn Fadāla narrated to us; Muāwiya ibn Sālih narrated to us; he said: A man came to Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—and said, “Commander of the Faithful, my mother is a very elderly woman. I serve as her mount: I carry her on my back, stooping beneath her and bracing myself with my hands, and I tend to her just as she used to tend to me. Have I duly repaid her?” He replied, “No.” The man asked, “Why, Commander of the Faithful?” He replied, “You do that for her while praying to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to cause her to die, whereas she did it for you while praying to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to prolong your life.”
