187 — Muhammad ibn Sālih related to me, saying: Alī ibn Muhammad related to me, from al-Qāsim ibn al-Fadl al-Huddānī, from Julhuma al-Yahmadī, who said: One day, al-Muhallab mentioned men of valor and said, “The most formidable of men are the Red One of Quraysh, the son of the woman from Kalb, and the man with the mule.” An elderly man among them named al-Hutāt said, “We do not know these men you have mentioned.” He replied, “As for the son of the woman from Kalb, he is Musab ibn al-Zubayr. He was cut off and left with seven men. They offered him safe-conduct, but he refused, held to his course, and was killed. As for the Red One of Quraysh, he is Umar ibn Ubayd Allāh ibn Ma'mar. Whenever the vanguard of a cavalry force encountered us, he drove it back from us. As for the man with the mule, he is this donkey from Banū Tamīm, Abbād ibn al-Husayn. We were never in dire straits without him delivering us from them.” He said: Al-Farazdaq ibn Ghālib then said to him, “Never have we seen an elderly man more mistaken than this one today! What of Ibn Khāzim and Abd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr?” He replied, “Abū Firās, we were speaking only of human beings; those two are not human.”
