186 — Muhammad ibn Sālih related to me, saying: Alī ibn Muhammad al-Qurashī related to us, from Maslama ibn Muhārib, who said: I heard Awf al-Arābī say: Al-Hasan said, “I have never seen anyone of greater valor than Abbād ibn al-Husayn and Abd Allāh ibn Khāzim. As for Abbād, he spent a night at a breach the Muslims had made in the wall of Kabul, exchanging spear-thrusts with the polytheists in defense of it throughout the night until daybreak and preventing them from sealing it. When morning came, he was still as he had been at the beginning of the night. Then Ibn Khāzim arrived—a man equal to him in valor but better at protecting himself. He fought them at the breach until the Muslims broke through. The Muslims then fought them in the space between the city wall and the wall they had breached, driving them back to the city gate. The polytheists had an elephant with them, which they sent ahead into the city. Ibn Khāzim struck and disabled the elephant, and it collapsed across the gateway, preventing them from closing it. The polytheists fled, and the Muslims entered the city and took control of it.”
