181 — Abū Ishāq narrated to us; he said: Muāwiya narrated to us, from Abū Ishāq, from a man of Medina, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said:

On the Day of Uhud, the polytheists climbed Mount Uhud. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sad, “Drive them off, Sad”—meaning, “Repel them.” Sad said, “How can I drive them off by myself, O Messenger of Allah?” He repeated the command, and Sad gave the same reply. Sad then said to himself, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is telling me to drive them off, while I keep giving this reply. If he says it a third time, I shall certainly do it.”

He then said, “Drive them off, Sad! May my father and mother be ransomed for you!” Sad said: “I took an arrow from my quiver and shot one of them, killing him. My arrow was then shot back at me, and I picked it up, recognizing it. I shot another man with it and killed him. My arrow was again shot back at me; I recognized it and picked it up. I then shot another man and killed him. My arrow was shot back at me once more, and I picked it up, recognizing it. They then descended from their position. I said, ‘This is an arrow blessed with my blood,’ and kept it in my quiver.”

It remained with Sad until he died, then with his sons, and was subsequently lost.
