178 — Abū Ishāq Ismāīl ibn Abī al-Hārith narrated to us: Muāwiya ibn Amr narrated to us, from Abū Ishāq, from al-Awzāī, from Hassān ibn Atiyya, who said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched an army that included Ibn Rawāha and Khālid. When they formed ranks against the polytheists, one of the polytheists came forward and began reviling the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). A Muslim man said, “I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, and my mother is so-and-so. Revile me and revile my mother, but refrain from reviling the Messenger of Allah.” This only spurred him on further. The polytheist repeated the same abuse, and the Muslim repeated the same appeal. He then said, “If you do so a third time, I will fall upon you with my sword.”

The polytheist did so again, whereupon the Muslim charged at him. The man turned and fled, and the Muslim pursued him until he broke through the polytheists’ ranks and struck him with his sword. The polytheists then surrounded the Muslim and killed him.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Are you amazed at a man who supported Allah and His Messenger?”

The polytheist later recovered from his wounds and embraced Islam. He was known as al-Ruhayl.
